Crown Hills Community College

Crown Hills Community College (CHCC) is a mixed comprehensive secondary school located in Leicester, East Midlands.

The name of the steelband is Crown Hills Community College Steel Band and it was formed in the early 1970’s in order to widen the musical opportunities within the school.

The steelband consists of Tenor Pans, Single and Double Seconds, Single and Double Guitars, Cellos, two sets of Six-Pan Bass and a Drum Kit
.

The pupils usually practice for an hour each week, but this has been increased to two practice sessions a week.

The pupils are taught by Ms Patricia Munroe
, who was a former pupil at Crown Hills. She is a Specialist Tutor who is also a member of ‘Contrast Steelband’, UK and European Steel Band Champions in 2012/3 and 2013/4.

Playing steelpans is now a popular music activity in which students take part. The steelpans offer a wide range of skills in music performance, and these skills allow the pupils to be fluent in several genres of music, ranging from Caribbean to contemporary pop.

The Steelband performs frequently at various school events such as Fundraisers, Christmas Concerts, and Celebration Evenings. They have also played at other, out-of-school, venues, including the Leicestershire Music Teachers Conference, Tesco Metro Opening, a wedding, Pan Jam, the Leicester Town Hall Square, and our Abbey Park Olympic Torch Relay Event.
During the performances the steelband is usually conducted by one of the players.

Crown Hills Community College has also hosted local Steel Band performances as a partner of the Leicester-Shire Music Education Hub.
