Steelpan Players With Sensory Loss

Playing steelpans has proven to be both a pleasurable and educational experience. It is a fact that traditional learning, to play by rote, has given many students without musical knowledge the opportunity to learn how to play steelpans.

The rote method of teaching has inspired Walthew House to set up a steelband for its users. Walthew House is an independent charity supporting people in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

These people include those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing or who have dual sensory loss. Walthew house is also a member of the National Association of Local Societies for Visually Impaired People (NALSVI). With help from the North West Steel Band Association (NWSBA) the Walthew House Steelband was set up January 2009.

In just over a year, the steelband has arranged a steelpan concert to showcase their achievements
